Oliver McGowan Tier 2
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
It is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff. This Tier 2 training is co-delivered by trainers with lived experiences of learning disabilities and autism. It is a standardised package approved by the government, ensuring consistency and recognition across health and care sector employers.

Positive Risk Management
We will introduce staff to a person-centred and values-led approach to positive risk management. Throughout the workshop, we will discuss why and how we might take risks when providing care and address the importance of an individual’s right to risk-taking. We will support staff to recognise how to support disabled children, young people and adults in making informed decisions around risk management.
Personal Assistant Training
Our team will highlight the role of a Personal Assistant, its background and its importance in providing disabled people with the opportunity to lead independent lives, through our own experiences of being a PA and having PA’s. We will address the part that person-centred care has to play within the role of a PA, as well as touching on important safeguarding information, and the impact of effectively managing positive risk when supporting an individual.
Creating a Children’s Book
Alex Winstanley, the founder of Happy Smiles Training CIC, is a published author after writing a series of award-winning children’s books on a range of disabilities and conditions.
Now Alex is guiding others towards creating their own children’s titles, which can provide information in easy-to-understand books about a range of different topics.
